I don’t really understand May’s “Plan B”. It strikes me as “let’s try Plan A over again”:
May:
‘If you want to tell Brussels what this House will accept, you have to vote for it. If you want to leave with a deal, you have to vote for it.
Talk about passing the buck. The problem isn’t with Brussels, though May uses that in the same way that Trump uses “California” or “New York”.

The reality of all this is that the Tories in general and May in particular seemed to think like Trump did with the shutdown: That the threat of the UK up and leaving the EU would give them leverage because Brussels would be shocked and frightened by the prospect and rush to offer a sweet deal to maintain good relations.
What they found was that Brussels has larger concerns than one of its problem children making idle threats and that’s that the other children might get it in their own heads to push for such deals with their own threats to leave. So even if there were those who wants to give the UK a “better” deal (spoilers: There’s not), the needs of the EU override the needs of a bunch of self-important pricks at 10 Downing.

This is all Cameron’s fault. May was presented a losing hand and she wasn’t forceful enough or clever enough to figure out a way around it.
May took the job and pushed through with it for 2 years, long past the point where she might have vocalized that the whole thing was the dog’s bollocks and suggested abandonment or at least ratcheting down the nation’s expectations. Hell, she could go out there tomorrow, announce that Brexit was a mistake, and that Her Majesty’s Gov’t will be stepping back from Article 50.
She’s as much a willing participant as Cameron was for going along with this lunacy because he assumed it would never advance past the referendum.
re: #18 Hecuba’s daughter

It was assumed that the EU would waver and buckle and offer the UK a Sweetheart Deal to keep it close to the Union.
They failed to see that the EU had no interest in setting such a precedent and made a test case out of the UK.
And the Tories failed to see that the clusterfuck of short-sighted self-interest that led to the Brexit referendum in the first place would never produce a majority to approve any deal that was less that a complete Cave on the part of the EU. They stood firm, and now the UK is teetering on the edge of disaster.

A police union rep on local television last night gave the impression that the deaths were caused by anyone who was critical of police in the last couple of years.
Looking at the news reports of the Houston raid that resulted in those deaths (the suspects) and injuries (four cops) it’s really hard to see where “pot-stirring” had anything to do with it. It seems like a fairly “normal” bust-in drug raid: except that the suspects were strapped and opened fire on the officers. Who promptly blew them away.
Must one of those police-union by-laws: union heads are obliged to spout tough-talk rhetoric after every incident, regardless of circumstances.

Police Unions are not so much unions as “professional associations” like the American Medical Association or the Bar Association. They are about sheltering their own from responsibility.
Similar things can be said about Teachers’ unions, but the comparisons end there: teachers can put you in detention but cannot arrest or detain you at their discretion, for starters…

One big picture takeaway from this intelligence hearing: There are huge new challenges to the U.S. The president isn’t talking about any of them. He’s focused on the southern border, which doesn’t come up in the threats assessment as a significant security issue.

CINCINNATI (AP) — A medical helicopter crashed Tuesday in a remote wooded area on its way to pick up a patient, killing all three crew members, authorities said.
Survival Flight medical transportation reported around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday losing communication with a helicopter flying from the Mount Carmel Hospital in Grove City to pick up a patient from a hospital in Pomeroy, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Authorities located wreckage nearly three hours later in rugged terrain near the community of Zaleski, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Columbus.
The helicopter broke apart in a remote area connected only by logging trails, said Highway Patrol Lt. Robert Sellers. Other state and local authorities helped at the crash site in Vinton County.

AOC isn’t white, so it seems like she would be a good fit. Plus she could beat up on Trump for not spending money on Puerto Rico since that’s her lineage.
Which is why they’re going to assume that the DNC is somehow “ashamed” of her and handed this off to a “safe” choice like Abrams.

Abrams is a smart choice to deliver the response. There is a senate race in Georgia in 2020, and it would sure help to get to a senate majority if Abrams ran and won that seat.
I agree, but if we’re going to go after people who attack Abrams for being racist, we could do the same with AOC. (Sometimes it takes me twice to get the statement right.)

Perot had a lot of things going for him in 1992 that Schultz doesn’t have right now. The Democratic Party in 1992 was still in the wilderness and didn’t seem to know who or what it was going to be. GHW Bush had “lost” the conservative base of the GOP, as established by Buchanan’s challenge; and generally, with the economy souring Bush was losing mainstream support. The lack of social media, the internet, and even cable also helped Perot in 1992, he could literally buy infomericals on the big three networks and guarantee attention.
The Democratic Party today is much more sound and aware of what/who it is. The GOP is in disarray mostly because Trump “thrives” on chaos. Schultz couldn’t pull the audience that Perot did in 1992 by buying time on TV. And given the interactive nature of social media, his coverage is going to be a lot more negative than Perot.
And that still gets to the very real problem of nobody being able to identify Schultz’s base today.
GOP just took a very bruising loss on the shutdown, stuck now trying to come up with something in 3 weeks that will kick the can further down the road in a manner that will satisfy everybody. Decide the best way forward is to up the ante by threatening to default on the nation’s debts unless the DNC bends to their demands.

Well it’s pretty complicated. Right now NI and the ROI share a soft border, a result of the Good Friday Agreement. Brexit however complicates that. They could maintain the status quo. They could return to the hard border which would be miltarized. Or the other outcome could be Irish reunification. The problem is though NI still has divisions. Brexit passed there but it was among lines. The Catholic areas were much like Scotland, in favor of staying in the EU but the more Protestant areas were in favor of leaving.

The coal plants are getting retired at a faster clip because the economy of running them isn’t there. It’s cheaper to go to natgas, both on building new, doing the emissions, and the costs for materials.

I had long arguments with Loomis at LGM about LE unions. Loomis thinks every worker in America should be unionized, including the military. Leaving the constitutional issues with unions in the military aside, I argued that any officer of the government who has power to take life of the citizenry should not be in a union because it subverts their responsibility to the people and is antagonistic to the principle that they are subordinate to elected officials.

Re: Discussion above on repealing the estate tax.
Does the Senate really believe that anything along those lines would pass the House? Is this talk all in response to Warren’s wealth tax? What are they thinking to accomplish? Given the annual deficit, how are they seriously talking about this?
They only care about the deficit when there is a Democrat in the WH. Its a messaging bill to the donors reminding them to keep the $$ flowing to the GOP.
I do see Tulsi has a primary challenger. Good.

I wish Republicans and Trump would just say that out loud. Remember what happened when Secretary Clinton suggested that she would retrain coal miners if she won the presidency? Given the backlash, you would have thought she had said that she was going to behead them one by one on Pennsylvania Avenue. Coal is a dying industry and everyone needs to just admit that.

I don’t have a problem with it; we badly need strong unions to look out for workers.

The coal miners are not interested in exploring alternatives that may require book learning. They are especially not interested in hearing suggestions from a woman. They are only interested in preserving the old way of life and not confronting the frightening new world out there.
Of course, part of the problem, despite what Bret Stephens has to say (nytimes.com), it’s possible that thanks to modern technology, there won’t be well-paying jobs available for much of the population.

They want those old jobs because that’s all that the small burghs they hail from can support. The educational infrastructure for jobs that require more than a basic education just don’t exist and the cost of creating them would mean either relying upon federal funding or increasing local taxes. And since the first is treated as tantamount to socialism while the latter is viewed as the gateway drug to such, they choose to remain dirt poor and every bit as dumb because it worked for their families for generations.
I can’t talk about coal as an expert but I think I know a little more than most and certainly more than Trump but coal was on the decline after WWII as my mom’s two grandfathers- both miners grew older and sicker from the years they worked in the mines. Story I always heard was that my grandfather after he dropped out of school tried working in the mines and steel mills. He hated it. He ended up being drafted. Used his GI money on trade school and became a brick mason and not long after my grandparents married, they moved down here. Johnstown’s coal mines were declining then and that was close to 65 years ago. You hate that people have lost their jobs but HRC did offer retraining which a lot of these guys didn’t want to hear which is honestly why I’m not too sympathetic.

I’m just glad that my grandparents wanted a better future for my mom and her brother. I always liked visiting Johnstown as a kid but visiting it two summers ago was sad because the town has definitely seen better days and bringing the mines back isn’t going to fix that.
I mean I’m sorry to sound unsympathetic but there are programs that could get these people new lines of work. I guess for my family mining wasn’t really a generational thing. It was just something that paid the bills as my ancestors hoped for better futures for their descendants.

“…[American architect Philip] Johnson embraced nearly everything Hitler stood for. As late as 1940, Johnson was insisting that photos of victims of the Nazis being shown in the American press were staged in Brooklyn. He openly talked about his hatred for the Jews — “a different breed of humanity, flitting about like locusts,” as he would later describe them — and his belief in racial purity.”
“The decline in fertility, so far as scientists have been able to discover, is unique in the history of the white race,” Johnson wrote in a 1938 article. “In short, the United States of America is committing race suicide.”

By the time the 5th Circuit heard a constitutional challenge to Act 620, Justice Anthony Kennedy—who cast the fifth vote to strike down the Texas statute—had retired. He was poised to be replaced by Brett Kavanaugh, a hard-line abortion opponent eager to overturn Roe. And so, in clear anticipation of a shift away from abortion rights, a panel of judges for the 5th Circuit upheld the Louisiana law in June Medical Services v. Gee. The full 5th Circuit then declined to reverse the panel’s decision, with Trump’s four appointees voting to let the ruling stand. (Trump’s fifth appointee to the court, Kyle Duncan, recused himself because he helped defend Act 620 before joining the bench.)

Karma or can’t get a break? A couple of years ago someone swiped the rear left of my leased Toyota Carolla in a parking lot leaving some bad visible scrapes, but no broken bumper or lights or anything. I was worried about having to deal with that damage when I turned in the car. But then a friend of son backed into the car at his house at roughly the same place. Their insurance paid for that damage and cancelled out the existing damage (which was, after all, scrapes and not dents, right?). Today after I left for work my wife walking to her car in our parking lot found a piece of plastic that matched the color of our car and she texted me to ask if I had noticed anything. I had just gotten the car back from the collision center last Thursday. I thought, “maybe they just need to glue it back on.” But when I went out to look after getting home, there was a crack and a scrape on the lower right rear bumper, and the seam between the rear panels near the rear-right wheel well were uneven. Fuck! Someone hit my son in the parking lot while he was at his soccer practice last night.
How do I know? Because, as I said, my wife found that triangular piece in our tiny parking lot this morning after I left with the car for work (I never noticed because I just enter to drive on the left driver’s side of the car). The car is parked at the back of the the small townhouse-assigned space lot where there is not room to park on the right. It’s impossible that it was damaged in our lot after my son got home last night. And it couldn’t have happened while I was at work because of the part my wife found after I had left.
I was just at the dealership to discuss options for after the lease yesterday. Fuck fuck fuck. I have no proof to show my insurance company beyond the narrative I’ve just explained. Any advice? It’s not major damage, but I’d guess it would still be in the $700-$800 range based on our recent repair, but that’s big to us. I have full insurance through Geico. Will they pay for a repair? That happened yesterday but I only found out about today? Dammit. This is the stupid stuff that keeps me up at night. Karma for feeling that I had cheated the first small detailing repair when my son’s friend hit the bumper?
Nope, not delinquent. As Snopes points out, she is simply on a repayment plan (as many Americans are.)

Interesting factoid. Even though the Democrats gained control of the House, the GOP still has the majority of congressmen in 26 states, because of their dominance in small states. This means that in the event that a 3rd party candidate actually won some states, preventing either major party candidate from getting to 270 electoral votes, the House would elect the GOP candidate President, even if he finished third in the popular vote.

Spent part of my reading today getting familiar with Howard Schultz.
To me, the most galling thing about this guy’s stances on taxing millionaires and universal healthcare? Even if everything he ever earned was taxed at a 70% marginal rate, he’d still have enough money to last several lifetimes, and still would be able to afford the best medical care this country has to offer.
Fuck this guy. I hope he crashes and burns. The fact that he’s willing to risk Trump winning by being in this race is fucking sickening.
Hey, you know these guys need to be paid, these job creators. Why, if he had to pay 70% on the money over $10 Million, he’d probably just stick with a minimum wage job in retail.
